What are 0870 numbers?

0870 numbers belong to a range of numbers designated by Ofcom (www.ofcom.org.uk); the range includes:-

0800 Freephone
0845 ‘Local’ rate
0870 ‘National’ Rate
0844/0871 Special Rate

These types of numbers are collectively known as Non-geographic numbers (NGN).

Although 0870 numbers are commonly referred to as ‘national rate’ numbers, phoning an 0870 number from a BT line costs up to 8p/min (inc. VAT).

Typical fixed-line call packages offer calls to UK Landline numbers at 3 pence per minute or less.
